Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will go head-to-head for a Champions League record 17th time

European giants Bayern Munich and Real Madrid go head to head in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday evening. The German side welcome their Spanish counterparts for the first leg this week before the return fixture at the Bernabeu on April 18.

It is interesting to see that ex-Real boss Carlo Ancelotti face the La Liga side for the first time since his departure in 2015, with his former assistant – Zinedine Zidane –  managing real Madrid side.

Ancelotti won the Champions League at Real in 2014 and zidane repeated the same success last season. Real Madrid has won the champions league 11 times while Bayern Munich are Europe’s joint third most successful team having been crowned champions on five occasions.

In head to head matches, since their first meeting in the second group stage during the 1999-2000 season, Bayern have won eight to Real Madrid’s seven with just one draw.

Their last meeting was in April 2014 and  the Bundesliga winners suffered their biggest ever European home defeat with a 4-0 margin.

Toni Kroos, the former Bayern mid-fielder is now playing for Real Madrid  while former Madrid players Arjen Robben and Xabi Alonso will play  for Bayern today. This specialty makes the match more exciting.
