Football giant FC Barcelona could play in the Premier League if Catalunya wins Sunday’s referendum for independence from Spain, the region’s sports minister has said.

Barcelona’s future in La Liga is in some doubt as their home Catalunya is bidding for independence from Spain. It is believed Barca would not be able to continue in La Liga if independence is secured. Not FC Barcelona alone, other teams like Espanyol and Girona will also face the same consequences.

And the Catalan sport minister has claimed they could move to another national league and possibly to English Premier League.

“In the case of independence, Catalan teams in La Liga Barcelona, Espanyol and Girona will have to decide where they want to play: in the Spanish league or a neighbouring country like Italy, France or the Premier League,” said Gerard Figueras.

FC Barcelona officials are confident they could choose to play in whichever league they want including the Spanish League. But it would probably not be as easy as they think.

Various European football leagues have teams which are not from that country. Swansea City of the Premier League are from Wales while there are other teams like Wrexham (Wales) and Newport County (South Wales) too are in the English league system.
