For the first time in 16 years France won the Davis Cup after defeating Belgium for 3-2 on Sunday. Now both France and Britain shares the third place on the list for the most Davis Cup titles. The first and second position are shared by United States (32) and Australia (28). In 2001 France won their last title. In 2002, 2010 and 2014 they lost in finals.

The hosts began Sunday’s final with a lead of 2-1. But  Belgium’s David Goffin, the best player of the final, kept hope for his country for the first title in the team competition by leveling the tie at 2-2. In the first reverse singles match he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the French city of Lille.

In the last Final France’s Pouille, World number 18,  claimed victory for his country over Belgium’s Darcis, World number 76,  with an emphatic 6-3, 6-1, 6-0. Darcis looked in trouble throughout and never got into the swing of the match.

After the match Pouille said. “After the loss of I was crazy in my head and It was like ‘go on, play your game, try to beat him’. This is a feeling from another world. I am so proud of my team. After a long 16 years, we finally got it, I’m very happy.”
